Koh Tao, also known as Ko Tao is one of Thailand’s most popular islands to visit. The name Koh Tao literally translates to Turtle Island. The island has been growing in popularity in recent years, especially with younger backpackers, who are interested in diving. This crowd also manages to bring a great nightlife and some weed to the island. Cannabis is illegal in Thailand, but fairly easy to find at more touristy places.
Cannabis laws in Thailand
Marijuana is illegal in Thailand. It is classified as a level 5 drug, and theoretically, the punishment for possessing 10kg or more of cannabis is a prison and a fine. If you have more than 10kg on you, then you are considered to be a big-time smuggler and can get in a lot of trouble. The law is not very specific about what should happen if you only have a few grams on you as only the classification of 10kg or more exists. However, the police and government generally do not target tourists that have a bit of weed on them. If you get caught with a couple of grams on you, a fine is the most likely punishment.
There are a lot of people, especially tourists that smoke weed in Thailand, but you still need to be discrete about it and watch out for the police. There is a lot of police on Ko Tao, so always be careful if you plan on smoking in public.
Getting weed in Koh Tao
The best way to get weed in Ko Tao is by asking around in the bars. A lot of the owners and people that work there will sell cannabis to tourists. Just ask them and if you do not look suspicions, they will sell to you. Not all bars sell however, so if someone says no, do go and ask in another bar. You can also ask the tourists and backpackers that are there. They will often know who sells or will hook you up with some of their own weed. The price is about 500 baht for a baggie containing a few grams. The quality is not the best, as the weed is often grown outside.
