Koh Lipe is one of the most popular tourist destinations in Thailand and possibly the most beautiful spot in South East Asia. Bali and Koh Samui might fans might want to argue, but the facts are that Koh Lipe is awesome and a lot of fun. Getting weed there is pretty easy and you shouldn’t have much trouble. There are a couple of peculiarities however, that we discuss below.
Cannabis laws in Thailand
Marijuana has been traditionally smoked in Thailand for ages, mainly used for its medicinal purposes. However, in the 1930s cannabis was made illegal and remains that way to this day. Theoretically, you can go to prison for possessing weed, but that is very unlikely. The Thai police are more concerned with traffickers of large quantities of weed and meth, than about people smoking for their own personal use, and usually, they will give you a fine, instead of sending you for jail.
It’s important to never carry more than a few grams of weed on you, or hard drugs, as that can get you into a lot of trouble. It’s fairly safe to smoke a joint at a remote beach, or in a ‘happy’ bar, but do not do it in the more urban and crowded places, as the locals and the cops do not always appreciate it. As long as you pay a little attention, you should be able to avoid all police issues, while in Koh Lipe.
Getting weed in Koh Lipe
It’s pretty easy to get weed in Koh Lipe. There are a few bars, that are well known and weed-friendly, so just keep an eye open and be on the lookout for the scent of marijuana when walking around the beach. You could also get cannabis from your hostel or guesthouse staff. Many of them will be happy to outright sell you, or at the very least show you where to get it from. You can expect to pay around 20 USD for a 5-gram baggie, but the prices fluctuate a lot, especially for tourists.
